  • Notes
    • By proving who she is NOT, Frances Walters, wife of the Gunsmith. She is not Frances Neal; the Neals located in this part of Halifax are of the 'Beaverpond of Amelia Neals' The d/o William and Martha Neal married Samuel Carter. His daughter, Louisiana Franklin, married Thomas David Neal of the same family of Beaverpond Neals. So there was an association between the Carters and these Neals; but not to the Gunsmith, and certainly not to the Daniel Neales.

I also considered the Watkins of Chickhomany Creek and Swift Creek; location of Giles families very early, but no found connection to the Gunsmith.

Some member of the Walters family is shown singed, [witness] on every document signed by Richard and George and Frances Carter. [denotes a family member]

The Walters are documented with 4 Magby wives. Why else would Richard Elijah Carter, s/o Spencer Carter name one of his children with the middle name Magby, if his grandmother, Frances Carter is not a Magby. [The Magbys are Scottish immigrants who travel from Charles Co., MD]

This preponderance of circumstantial evidence and thorough research into the families around her, has led me to conclude Frances Walters married Richard Gunsmith Carter and after his death, James Lucas. She is the daughter of William Walters and Susannah Magby [Mockbee, etc]

Son, Charles Ewell Carter marries back into the Walters.

    • Son, Charles Ewell Carter names daughter Lucy Walters Carter; his wife Kesiah Walters, and Frances Carter (nee Walters) are relatives. Moreover, after studying this family for many years and observing the naming patterns employed by them, I have concluded that Frances Walters [wife of Richard Carter, Gunsmith] is very likely the granddaughter of Immigrant, Charles Ewell. The name Ewell is passed down for several generations among her descendants, as is the Magby name for her grandmother, Susannah Magby.
    • Frances Carter, Widow of Richard GS Carter married James Lucas, the father of her son's wife [Spencer Carter, m. Verlinda Lucas, d/o James.]

We have now proven the lines of several of the children of Frances and Richard Carter; they prove both DNA and a paper trails, as the sons of Richard Carter who was a gunsmith, may have descended from the Barford lines as purported in the Books. I have concluded her identity is that of Walters who lived alongside the Richard Carters. Walters documentation with witnesses of Richard and George to their deeds, include Walters who sign as witness to Richard Carter's inventory and other land deeds. No single document identifies Frances, but a preponderance of circumstantial evidence is found among the individuals who would be her siblings. The name Spencer is found among these families, as is Ewell.

By the way Carter Group R1b-08 is also in the DF27 descent tree, but I believe only one member (#22975) has had a BigY test. This would be the descent sequence for members of that branch: R-P312>ZZ11>DF27>Z195>Z274>Z209>FGC83504>Z295>
      Z270>Z211>Z297>Z278>BY36223

Carter Group R1b-02 has had a couple of BigY testers, and is on the same side of the DF27 tree as R1b-08 -- downstream of Z295 -- but is not, by a long shot, on the same branch. Those Carter "cousins" diverged around 4,000 years ago, clearly not in Virginia, and probably not on the large island that would become England. And the name Carter wasn't a thing, yet, even as an occupation.

I am working on Group R1b - 08 with several connections in Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties. If you can add any information I would appreciate it. The connections would be to the brothers Spencer Carter, Thompson Carter or John [Charles] Ewell Carter. Spencer Carter is definitely not of the Thomas Carter of Barford line.
