Page 241a. Aug 27, 1764 from Peter Edwards of P, to Richard Carter of P, for 20 £, a certain tract of land in P containing about 66 acres, and bounded by [blank] .Signed- , Peter Edwards. Wit -Theo Carter, Theod Carter Jr. Recorded Sep 17, 1764.
    • Two Richard Carters are found in Antrim Parish [Halifax Co., VA] in the early records.

One Richard is noted as a Gunsmith is then found with Frances as his wife until he dies [bef Jul 1787].

The second a Tailor. Richard Carter, a Tailor is proved to have married Susannah Bigger in Prince Edward Co., and later moved to Halifax Co., VA

By 1774 another Richard is noted in deeds with a wife, Mary Ann. She is believed to be the Granddaughter of Susanna Carter; now proved by dna analysis NOT to be of the Giles Carter lines.

In the 1785 First Census of the United States; all three Richards are shown and labeled (GS), (T), (S) plus 5 other Richard Carters with no notations.

    • 9 Feb 1779 (PDB5/149) from George Carter of P, [Pittsylvania] to Samuel Atkinson of Cumberland Co., for 1000~, 450 acres in P on the branches of the Lower Double Cr. of Dan River, bounded by pine pointers near the old road, then to Colo Wilson, the Great Branch, Richd Carter. Signed - George Carter. Wit - Richd Carter, Robert Waltrs, John Atkinson, Mary, the wife of the sd George Carter, relinquished her right of dower to the lands within mentioned. Recorded 20 Apr 1779. [Richard Carter GS is dead in July 1778, as his inventory is returned, therefore this is Richard (Tailor)] The implication of this record is that both families of Richard the Tailor and Richard the Gunsmith Carter are acquainted, as Richard Gunsmith could not have witnessed this deed after his death.

    • Richard Carter's Daughter, Mary Frances, married Frederick Miller. Frederick Miller testifies in the Chancery matter of John Carter's estate when the Legatees file suit for equal division of the land and slaves. This occurs 19 years after his death; presumably when the youngest son reaches age 21. We believe Frederick Miller would not testify unless he is a family member.

I have worked and studied this couple [Richard 'Gunsmith' Carter and Frances, his wife for many years. The books who show Frances as Frances Neale are inaccurate. She is Frances Walters, d/o William Walters and Susannah MAGBY. There has been much speculation and theories regarding this family. You will note as customary naming patterns using the grandmother's or mother's maiden name for a middle name. Magby, McBee and many other spellings identify the ancestors named Magby. These families are NOT descended from Thomas Carter. The dna results for Family Tree dna have identified descendants of several of the known children of Richard Carter and Frances Walters. They are each R1b-08. At least 4 or 5 men have tested with the exact same result. Also note on each deed record the witnesses are always Walters. William is dead, so her relatives are signators to ensure her [Frances] equity. This misidentification, likely begun with the Thomas Carter memoir is so very rampart in all quarters, and I fear will proliferate endlessly. Records concerning this family are found here. https://reynoldspatova.org/getperson.php?personID=I13984&tree=reynolds1 Mary Frances Eggleston (nee Reynolds)

By the way Carter Group R1b-08 is also in the DF27 descent tree, but I believe only one member (#22975) has had a BigY test. This would be the descent sequence for members of that branch: R-P312>ZZ11>DF27>Z195>Z274>Z209>FGC83504>Z295>
      Z270>Z211>Z297>Z278>BY36223

Carter Group R1b-02 has had a couple of BigY testers, and is on the same side of the DF27 tree as R1b-08 -- downstream of Z295 -- but is not, by a long shot, on the same branch. Those Carter "cousins" diverged around 4,000 years ago, clearly not in Virginia, and probably not on the large island that would become England. And the name Carter wasn't a thing, yet, even as an occupation.

I am working on Group R1b - 08 with several connections in Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties. If you can add any information I would appreciate it. The connections would be to the brothers Spencer Carter, Thompson Carter or John [Charles] Ewell Carter. Spencer Carter is definitely not of the Thomas Carter of Barford line.
