James Carlton Carter was my mother's elder brother. He married Alpha Lee Brown b. 29 Jun 1906 and died 25 Aug 1991, living in Jenkins Co., GA. Carlton died abt 1959, while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, having suffered a heart attack 'fighting the current'. He is buried in GA.

"Word Received of Death of James Carter"
James Carleton Carter, 59, a native of Danville, died yesterday in Panama City, Fla. after collapsing when pulled from the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
An autopsy was to be performed late yesterday to determine if his death had been cause by drowning or a heart attack.
Carter, a slaesman of hardware implements, and a client were swimming when the undertow became strong.
The companion was heading for shore, when he noticed Carter was struggling in the water. He turned to help him, and Carter collapsed.
Mr. Carter, who had made his home in Millens, Ga., was born and reared in Danville, the son of Mattie E. and the late Joseph A. Carter. His mother resides at 627 Jefferson St.
Although he had been away from the city for several years, he was a frequent visitor to his relatives her. A member of the Danville Golf Club, he spend a great deal of time there. His last visit was only a week ago.
Mr. Carter served in the Navy in both world wars.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alpha Lee Brown Carter, of Millen, Ga; three sisters, Mrs. Forrest L. Moses, Mrs. Samuel L. Reynolds and Mrs. Robert H. Clarke; and one brother, William D. Carter, all of Danville.
The brothers and sisters and their families will leave this morning for Millens, where funeral services will be conducted tomorrow.

"Carlton Carter Wins Promotion By U. S. Navy"
Word was received here yesterday by Mrs. J. A. Carter, 672 Jefferson street of the promotion of her son, J. Carlton Carter to chief petty officer in the United States Navy.
Carter served in the Navy during the First World war and has been in the Carolinas since that time. He reported in New Orleans on September 14th and is now in the Pacific. 1930 and 1940 censuses, living with father-in-law, Henry W. Brown Parents: Joseph Alpha CARTER and Madaline Frances "Mattie" EDWARDS.
Spouse: Alpha Lee BROWN. Alpha Lee BROWN and James Carlton CARTER were married in 1929 in Garfield, Emanuel, GA.
