He married Mary Branch, daughter of Christopher Branch and Ann Sherman. Richard died in 1744. His will written 19 June 1744 and recorded in Oct 1744 in Henrico County, VA. Court. Biographical sketch: Richard inherited from his father, a tract of land "beginning from the river to a place comonly called the long slash" and another tract from his uncle William Walthall. 24 Mar 1735, he patented 400 acres in Henrico and 10 Jan 1735, 400 acres in Amelia County. 4 Nov 1739, he bought from his brother, Henry, 400 acres in Raleigh Parish, Amelia County, which Henry had patented in 1735. And at the same time (probably) he sold to Henry the 400 acres in Henrico County which he had patented in 1725. There is no record of the sale, but it develops that Henry Walthall sold the tract 3 Mar 1758, to his son, Richard. His will of 19 June 1744, bequeathed his land to his three sons, Christopher, Henry and Richard, the other son William, having been given 300 acres in Amelia, probably in lieu of a legacy.
