Ellinor/Eleanor Brent[1, 2]

Female Est 1724 - Aft 1745  (~ 22 years)

Personal Information    |    Sources    |    All    |    PDF

  • Name Ellinor/Eleanor Brent
    • Daughter of Catherine Brent (nee Newton) and James Brent. NOTE: Evidence not seen that Eleanor instant is a different Eleanor. The conclusion that Giles Brent and Jane Chandler had a daughter, Eleanor is speculation; as is that she is the same Eleanor who married Stamps. I don't think it is the same person, even though the Carters appear in documentation.

    2. [S119] History of Northern Neck of Virginia, https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE5026375&from=fhd.
The Brents of Jamestown and Patowmack Town later to become Marlborough Town.
When Marlborough Town was erected in 1691, a brick courthouse was built at Marlborough, lots were purchased and homes were built on them by Captain Malachi Peale, Francis Hammerly, Sampson Darrell, Robert Brent, Captain George Brent, Captain Martin Scarlet, John Withers, Captain George Mason, Doctor Maddox, Peter Beach, George
Andrews, John Hawkins, Samuel Hayward, John Waugh, Robert Alexander. Several of these persons bought two, three and four lots, on each of which they were required to build a house or else the property reverted to the State. There were 92 lots shown on the original plat of the town drawn in 1691 by Theodorick Bland. The town site was resurveyed in 1731 and the plat drawn on which 97 lots were shown.
Colonel George Brent, another member of the Brent family of Stafford County, became one of the most important men of northern Virginia. He served as Receiver-General of North Rappahannock; was a member of the House of Burgessesfrom Stafford County; served as the King?s Attorney; served as Agent with William Fitzhugh for the Proprietors of the Northern Neck until his death in 1699 (succeeded by Robert ?King? Carter); member of the Partnership (Nicholas Hayward, Richard Foote, Robert Bristow, and George Brent) as purchasers of
30,000 acres of land in Stafford County in 1688; and founder of Brent Town in Fauquier County, 1688.
Giles Brent migrated from Maryland and established his home on Aquia Creek in 1646, which he called ?Peace.? In Maryland he had been a member of the Maryland Assembly, Treasurer of the Colony, Judge, and Lieutenant-Govemor (Deputy-Govemor) of Maryland. In Stafford County he was its leading citizen for many years. Prior to his
going to Maryland he was a member of the Virginia Colony at Jamestown in 1625, twelve years before he appears in the Maryland records. Giles Brent was the first of his family to come to the Aquia Creek and Potomac Creek vicinity of Virginia. He was soon followed by his sisters, Margaret and Mary Brent, who came here in 1654. Margaret Brent
was one of the most illustrious figures in the early history of this vicinity.
Margaret Brent is said to be related to Governor Lord Calvert of Maryland. She was the executrix of Gov. Leonard Calvert?s will; the first person in America to advocate woman?s rights; a large and prominent land-holder. She owned the site now occupied by Fredericksburg and that of Alexandria. She was the first to anticipate these sites as favorable locations for towns. She was the first woman citizen of the Potomac Neck area. Of the early leading families of Marlborough and vicinity, the Brents were the most prominent. Woodstock Town on Aquia Creek a short distance above Marlborough Point, was the principal seat of the Brents, but the Brent name appears over much of the Potomac Neck and adjacent area on early maps of the period. Giles Brent secured possession of the entire Potomac Neck in 1651 by grant from Governor Berkeley.
Malachi Peale came into possession of the immediate site of Marlborough Town some time previous to 1691, date of the founding of Marlborough Town. Peale owned the tract whereon the town was built or laid out in 1691. Before and during the Revolution, Marlborough Town was a very important port and manufacturing center. A public warehouse was established here with the founding of the town. The Accokeek Iron Works, a subsidiary of the Principio Company of Maryland, managed by Augustine Washington (father of George Washington) and after his death by Lawrence Washington, used Marlborough for its shipping port. The town was a leading shipping center for a wide area of northern Virginia, the Atlantic Seaboard ports, and foreign commerce. particularly after the Revolutionary War, the town
of Marlborough declined and finally ceased to exist soon thereafter.
