- Children of James and Agnes Finney Patterson:
12
James and Agnes (Finney) Patterson had twelve children who survived to adulthood. See each child?s chapter for corroboration of the information given below:I.JOHN PATTERSONb. 1777-1778(no baptism record); d. 1811; buried in Round Hill Cemetery in Elizabeth, Allegheny Co., PA; m. Mary Patterson, daughter of Robert &Mary (Stewart) Patterson of Rostraver, Westmoreland Co., PA. Note the first son named after the father?s father.II.SUSANNAH PATTERSONb. 1778-1779; bapt. 26 Sept 1779; d. 1849; buried in Round Hill Cemetery in Elizabeth, Allegheny Co., PA (per earlier transcription of burials; Susannah?s gravestone not found in 2009); m. William Patterson, son of Robert & Mary (Stewart) Patterson of Rostraver, Westmoreland Co., PA. Note the first daughter named after the mother?s mother?Susannah (Stewart) Finney. III.THOMASPATTERSONb. 1781; d. 7 Apr 1848, probably in Ohio Co., VA (later WVA); m. Sarah Craig. Note the second son named after the mother?s father (Thomas Finney).Thomas is buried (or has a memorial stone?) in the Old Presbyterian Cemetery (a/k/a North LibertyStreet Cemetery) in West Alexander, Washington Co., PA.
V.JAMES PATTERSON JR.b. perhaps abt. 1783; d. 18 Dec 1855 in Elizabeth, Allegheny Co., PA; place of burial unknown; m. 1stMary Watt; m. 2ndMary Swangel. Note: Calvin Patterson wrote 8/17/14: ?...second wife was Mary Swangel. The Swangie name came from HGP and is incorrect. Legal papers between her and James S. Patterson, his son, verify this.? I believe James was the 3rdson, named after his father.V.WILLIAM PATTERSONb. perhaps 1783-1784;d. 1860 inCrawford Co., PA; m. Sarah Stewart; buried in Hartstown Cemetery, Crawford Co., PA.I believe William wasthe 4thson so, per the Scotch-Irish naming pattern, he?d be named after hisfather?s oldest brother. Could James have had an older brother named William?VI.MARGARET PATTERSONb. 1787; d. 1856; unmarried; buried in West Newton Cemetery with sister Nancy and brother Joseph. The second daughter was usually named after the father?s mother. Did James? father, John, marry a woman named Margaret? VII.ELIJAH PATTERSONb. 1788;d. 1875; unmarried; place of burial unknown.Note: Calvin Patterson wrote 8/17/14: ?I walked the West Newton Cemetery and did not find any legible tombstone with Elijah Patterson (1788-1875? name.? Per naming pattern, Elijah, the 5thson, would be the name of the mother?s oldest brother. James? wife, Agnes (Finney) did indeed have a brother named Elijah (bapt. by Rev. Cuthbertson 20 Oct 1765).VIII.JOSEPH PATTERSON b. 1790-1791; d. 1855; unmarried; buried in West Newton Cemetery with sisters Margaret and Nancy.IX.SAMUEL PATTERSONb. 1794-1797; d. 1858; m. Susan Finley; probablyburied in West Newton Cemetery.X.FINNEY HENRY PATTERSONb. 1796-1799; d. 1823; unmarried; place of burial unknown.(The middle name of ?Henry? is found only in HGP.)Note: Calvin Patterson wrote 8/17/14: ?Per HGP [Finney] drowned in the Youghiogheny River near home.?XI.ROBERT PATTERSON b. 1798-1799; d. 1845;m. Rebecca Wilson; place of burial unknown.XII.NANCY PATTERSON b. 1802; d. 1865; unmarried; buried in West Newton Cemetery with sister Margaret and brother Joseph.Nancy is a Scotch-Irish nickname for Agnes. Thus the third daughter was named, in accordance with the naming pattern, after the mother (Agnes Finney)

This report compiled by James S. Hunt and dated 31 Aug 2014 ignores many individuals named James Patterson and concentrates on the descendants of the s/o of James Patterson, Jr. and his wife Agnes Finney [She may be Agnes Finley-mfe] It is postulated that this James who married Agnes is the s/o John as is noted in the diary of Rev. Cuthbertson. Cuthbertson arrives in this country in 1751. One of his first deeds is to baptise a group of congregants who are surely 'grown men and women'. Of these is James Patterson, and his sister Jane. Other notations by Cuthbertson show births of several Patterson baptisms to a James Patterson, a Peter Patterson, William Patterson, and others. The Muddy Run Meeting House was overrun with James Pattersons. George Reynolds is also baptised in 1751 and he is dead in 1752.

James Patterson is found mentioned numerous times in the Diaries of the Reverend John Cuthbertson who arrived in the Maryland, Pennsylvania area in 1751. Margaret Patterson who married William Reynolds is the daughter of this James. Mention is also made in the Cuthbertson Diary on page 117 of "A. Finley and James McClenehans 22 miles from John Watts." James Patterson's son, William married Esther Harris Findley (1745-1789) in Pennsylvania.

"What we do know with certainty is that by 26 Sept 1779 James and Agnes had crossed the mountains and were living in Southwestern Pennsylvnaia. This is the date on which Rev. Cuthbertson, during his one and only trip across the mountains, baptized James and Agnes' Patterson's daughter Susannah.
