GRETNA - Mary Reynolds, 87, of 595 Vaden Drive, Gretna, formerly of Chatham, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, at Gretna Health Care Center.
She was born on June 18, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, the daughter of the late James Wyatt Reynolds and Claudia Jefferson Reynolds.
She got her BS degree from Radford State Teachers College; MA degree from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. She studied at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville, Kentucky, at Columbia Seminary in Atlanta, Ga., and Emory University School of Theology.
She taught at Alabama College in Montevallo, Ala., Judson College, Marion, Ala., and Berry College, Rome, Ga., where she taught and served as Dean of Women and also Associate Dean of Students.
She was active in a number of organizations, and was ordained a deacon in the 1st Baptist Church in Rome, Ga. She was one of the first women to serve. She was elected deacon and chairman of the deacons in the Chatham Baptist Church. She also served as trustee and taught the Treadway Bible Class as long as she was able. She was a trustee of Hargrave Military Academy; a member of the William Pitt D.A.R. and United Daughters of the Confederacy.
She was predeceased by four sisters, Eva R. Cooper, Janie R. Hayden, Daisy R. Stutz and Norma R. Nuckols; four brothers, Frank Reynolds, Bill Reynolds, Sam Reynolds, and Oscar Reynolds.
She is survived by seven nieces and five nephews, Carol Lee Cooper, Betty Akers, Claudia Aaron, Linda Calhoun, Edna Krebs, Marie Murphy, and Charlotte Vincent, David Hayden, Steve Reynolds, Ceph Reynolds, Wallace Reynolds and William Reynolds.
Memorial services will be conducted at Chatham Baptist Church on Saturday, March 4, at 2 p.m., the Rev. Charles Warnock officiating.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Chatham Baptist Church Scholarship Fund or to the Berry College Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 490069, Mount Berry, Ga. 30149.
Scott Funeral Home of Chatham is in charge of the arrangements.
