SUSAN REBECCA SHIFLETT CARTER
Last rites for Mrs. George W. Carter, pioneer Fort Worth resident, who died here unexpectedly early Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. H. Jefferies, 902 Vinestreet, will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Mulkey Memorial Methodist church in Fort Worth.
Mrs. Carter, 79, came to Abilene late Thursday, accompanying Mr. and Mrs. Jefferies home from a visit to the Fort Worth stock show. Friday afternoon she joined her daughter in visiting with neighbors, and retired that night apparently in her usual health. At 11:30 o'clock she called her daughter and complained of illness. A physician, who was immediately summoned, said she was suffering from a heart attack. Death occurred at 1:30 a.m., two hours after she was stricken.
A short service was held at the Jefferies home Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock with Rev. W. C. Childress, pastor of First Methodist church, officiating. The body was to be sent to Fort Worth by train this morning at 2:35 o'clock. Mrs. Abe Cole of Anson, a sister of Mrs. Carter, was to accompany Mr. and Mrs. Jefferies and their family to Fort Worth for the funeral.
Mrs. Carter was Susan Rebecca Shiflett, born in Lynn county, Missouri, March 11, 1857. She moved to Denton county, Texas, at the age of 17 years, and was married to George W. Carter in 1877. The couple moved 56 years ago to Fort Worth, where Mrs. Carter had lived since. Her husband died in 1909.
Surviving are two sons, S. P. Carter and F. D. Carter of Fort Worth, two daughters, Mrs. R. W. Byars of Fort Worth and Mrs. Jefferies; 18 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; two brothers, L. D. Shiflett of Fort Worth; J. P. Shiflett of Handley; three sisters, Mrs. J. A. Neal of Texarkana; Mrs. Cole of Anson and Mrs. Ed Mason of Crosbyton. She was a member of Mulkey Memorial church.
Burial will be made in East Oakwood cemetery, Fort Worth, beside the grave of Mrs. Carter's husband. Laughter Funeral Home had charge of the local arrangements.
