Edmund Tate was one of the early settlers of Lynchburg and had a long and vexatious lawsuit with the Lynch family concerning the ownership of the land upon which the city is built, which he lost. He was very active in the movements which preceded the Declaration of Independence by the Colonies. He fought in many battles in the Revolution expecially at the Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse, and for gallant conduct he received the compliments of the commanding officers, and subsequently the thanks of Gen.
