Lt. Claiborne Barksdale, s/o Claiborne and Jane (Morton) Barksdale, was b 25 Aug 1783 at Rough Creek; d. 1839 at South Isle, Charlotte Co., VA where he is buried. An extensive and successful planter of Charlotte Co., Claiborne Barksdale was educated at Hampton Sidney. He accumulated a comfortable fortune and a large landed estate. In 1810 he purchased a plantation on Wardsfork Creek about two miles from Charlotte Court House. He sold this in 1825 and purchased a large estate on the Staunton River called 'South Isle." Though Soujth Isle has long since passed out of the family, the old home still stands and is known by that name today. Claiborne was very fond of blooded stock and bred some fine pedigreed horses on his beautiful old river plantation. Daughter Mary Jane Barksdale is married to William Armistead Fuqua. Nine children are named Mary Jane, Clarissa A. Hunt, Maria Louisa, Claiborne, Clement Read, Charles Henry, Edward Marcellus, Isaac Read, and Thomas Edmunds. William A. Fuqua, and Charles R.
