Mary Elizabeth Vaughan[1, 2, 3]

Female Est 1780 - Abt 1821  (~ 41 years)

Personal Information    |    Sources    |    All    |    PDF

  • Name Mary Elizabeth Vaughan
    • Mary Elizabeth has not been proven to be her name; it seems reasonable to this researcher, if she died in childbirth with her daughter Mary Elizabeth, she would have been named for her dying mother. [mfe]

NEW INFORMATION: Carters of Amelia County, Virginia
By Peyton Carter April 22, 2013 at 08:50:35

Because of the result of DNA testing that I submitted myself for, I have been forced to reexamined my findings for my family origins which I published with much fanfare in 2003, under the title, The Carters of Amelia County, Virginia. For generations, my family was stuck at John Carter of Amelia (1775-1852). I had long postulated that the answer lay in the unique names of his sons: William Ryland Carter (1809-1886) and Beverly Atwood Carter (1813-1862). Also, the birth of John's third and final child, Mary Elizabeth Carter in 1820, and his well documented marriage to Oney Pollard in 1821, indicated that there must have been a previous marriage, and that this wife died in birthing this daughter.

I am proud to announce that I believe I have finally found the key to this first marriage, which ties in all of the unique names as well. John Carter must have married a daughter of James Vaughan (c.1740-1803) and his second wife, Lucy Jeter. Her first name is not known yet, but it may be Mary or Elizabeth, for whom John Carter would have named his daughter, during whose birth his wife died. There are a number of land transactions that take place between James Vaughan and John Carter, but the key is in the names.

Atwood: James Vaughan is the son of Robert Vaughan. In 1747, Robert Vaughan leased to James Turner land for use by John Turner and his wife Mary for the duration of their lives. John Turner is also seen interacting in very personal ways with the Vaughans. John?s wife, Mary, was the sister of Robert Vaughan, and hence, an aunt to James Vaughan. John Turner dies and in 1759, Mary marries James Atwood of Prince Edward County, VA.

Ryland, Beverly: These names come through the Jeter side, the wife of James Vaughan. Lucy Jeter was the daughter of Thomas Jeter. His brother, Samuel, had married a Mary Dudley. The Dudley family had intermarried with the Beverly family and the Ryland family in Essex Co., VA. The Jeters had an affinity for these names. Sovereign Jeter, the nephew of Lucy Jeter Vaughan through her brother Henry Jeter, married the daughter of James and Lucy Vaughan, Matilda Vaughan. They named one of their sons Beverly Ryland Jeter. Another of Lucy?s brothers, Samuel Jeter, named two of his sons Samuel Beverly Jeter and Ryland Jeter.

So now that the matter of whom John Carter?s first wife is resolved, the question become who is John Carter descended from? This is more difficult, but there is a major clue in the will of Phoebe Hatchett in Lunenburg County, VA from 1819. Phoebe?s maiden name was Carter. Phoebe Carter married Presley Jeter in Amelia in 1783. Presley was another uncle of Sovereign Jeter and brother to Lucy Jeter Vaughan. Presley dies around 1808 and Phoebe remarries to a Mr. Hatchett. In her will, she mentions her four sisters: Elizabeth, Susannah, Jane, and Fannie. She also leaves 100 pounds in cash and all of her clothing to Matilda Vaughan Jeter, the wife of Sovereign Jeter and daughter of James Vaughan. In addition, she names her brother John Carter as executor. I strongly suspect that this John Carter is the same as my John Carter, that Phoebe is his sister (as are the others named), and that Phoebe is leaving money and clothes to the sister of her brother?s wife (and niece through marriage).

I am looking to chase down two other clues to help pin these Carters? origins down:

A Benjamin Carter witnesses a will for a Green Ligon in Nottoway in 1802 along with Presley Jeter. Green is the son of Richard Ligon, who married Olley (Olive) Jeter, a sister to Presley Jeter. It would be quite a coincidence for Presley Jeter to be witnessing a will with an unrelated Benjamin Carter, given that his wife Phoebe is a Carter.

In personal papers I have from John Carter?s son, William Ryland Carter, he refers to himself as William R. Carter Jr. This ?Jr.? obviously does not refer to his father, but may refer to his grandfather or an uncle (as was customary then). I am looking into William Carter, who marries Mary Scott in Lunenburg in 1779, and dies in 1812 in Prince Edward as a possible source. I believe he may be the Justice of the Peace William Carter listed in Amelia in 1781. He may be another brother of John and Phoebe?s, but not mentioned in Phoebe?s will, since he died 7 year before her. (See my previous post about William Carter for more information.)

Since there seem to be Lunenburg and Prince Edward connections, I am also looking into Harrison Carter, who married Sally Hatchett (there?s that Hatchett name again) in Lunenburg in 1797 and is mentioned in the Prince Edward Census in 1810.

While my book from 2003 seems to document accurately the Giles Carter clan up until Waddill Carter and Mildred Wade, connecting the John Carter mentioned in Waddill?s will in 1782 seems to have been incorrect. I appreciate any assistance in tracking this other Carter family down.
