I have figured out this much on Leon Sellers Carter line utilizing Findagrave and death certificates for the more recent of the line.... Margaret Caroline Byrd must have been with child when her husband was killed at Fredericksburg, Virginia.

James was the son of Charles Powell Carter and Susan Ingram. He was Killed in The Battle at Chancellorsville, Virginia. ???. He enlisted in the 14th Regiment of South Carolina Infantry, Company A "Lynches Creek Guards."

a brother of J.M. Carter, wrote shortly after the battle of Chancellorsville, VA about the death of "Mack."........ "Tell Caroline [he] died like a soldier with an immortal [torn] for it was given up that he acted more gallant than any man in the 14th Regiment. I got his knapsack and hat, also his pocketbook. He gave that to the Captain before he went into the fight and told him if he got killed to give it to his wife and tell her to live off of it. He was buried by the prison corps and several saw him after [he was] dead but I did not. Giles said he would not have known him but for his clothes...."

Believe he is buried at Spotsylvania Confederate Cemetery

      Giles Carter
      Birth: 25 Nov 1821
      Darlington County, South Carolina
      Death: 16 Aug 1885
      Darlington County, South Carolina
Giles was a son of Charles Powell Carter, Jr., and brother of Col. Will iam Ingram Carter, John Morgan Carter, Sidney Carter, and a couple of o thers. He was likely named for his uncle, Giles Carter, a brother of his father.
Giles served the Confederacy during the War Between the States in Company A, 14th Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers, Confederate States of America. Before the war broke out, Giles' family controlled a militia group known as the "Lynches Creek Guard" which later evolved into Company A .
Giles was a son of the former Susan Ingram. Susan apparently died, and his father remarried to Giles' formerly married aunt, a sister of his mother, Martha Serena Ingram Ward.
Giles Carter was born and died in Carterville, once located in Darlington County, South Carolina, and now in Florence County. The defunct town in now just a crossroads, known to some as Carter's Crossroads, not to be confused with Carter's Crossing which is not too far away in the current Darlington County.
      Burial:
Carter Cemetery, Florence County, South Carolina, Find A Grave Memorial# 55988867
