Giles was a son of Charles Powell Carter II, and brother of Col. William Ingram "Bill" Carter, John Morgan Carter, Sidney Carter, and a couple of others. He was likely named for his uncle, also a Giles Carter, a brother of his father.

Giles served the Confederacy during the War Between the States in Company A, 14th Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers, Confederate States of America out of Cartersville, then located in old Darlington District, now in Florence County. Before the war broke out, Giles' family controlled a militia group known as the "Lynches Creek Guard" which later evolved into Company A.

Giles was a son of the former Susan Ingram. Susan apparently died, and his father remarried to Giles' formerly married aunt, a sister of his mother, Martha Serena Ingram Ward. [We do not find this information to be correct]

The defunct town of Cartersville in now just a crossroads, known to some as Carter's Crossroads, not to be confused with Carter's Crossing which is not too far away in the current Darlington County
