CALLANDS - Henry Calvin Oakes, 79, of 14579 Callands Road, Callands, died Saturday, April 17, 2004, at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
He was born on August 20, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, the son of the late Wade Hampton Oakes and Minnie Smith Oakes.
He is survived by his wife Vera Reynolds Oakes of the residence. He is also survived by three daughters, Joan O. Chapin and her husband Will of Callands, Peggy Ann Oakes of Callands, Kay O. Hazelwood and her husband Harvey of Lynch Station; one son, H. C. Oakes, Jr. & his wife Joyce of Chesterfield; four sisters, Catherine O. Shelton of Axton, Mildred O. Reynolds and her husband Richard of Callands, Claire O. Bartlett and her husband A. G., and Joyce O. Crocker and her husband Harry, all of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, George E. Oakes & his wife Helen of Callands; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren.
Mr. Oakes was an army veteran of World War II, and received the Purple Heart and was a member of County Line Christian Church. In 1991, he received the award of merit for outstanding accomplishments in resource conservation from the Pittsylvania SWCD.
Funeral services were conducted at County Line Christian Church on Monday, April 19, at 2:00 PM, with the Minister Dean Ashby officiating. Burial was at County Line Christian Church Cemetery.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the County Line Christian Church Building Fund, 12711 Chatham Road, Axton, Va. 24054, or the Callands Rescue Squad, 11741 Callands, Road Callands, Va. 24530.
