Henry Humphreys
Birth 1787
Death 26 Mar 1840 (aged 52?53)
Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina
Burial: Buffalo Presbyterian Church Cemetery
Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina
Henry Humphreys came from Maryland to Caswell County, North Carolina. (Some sources say he was born in Virginia.) He was in Guilford County, NC by 1807, and settled in the new town of Greensborough (now Greensboro), one of its first settlers. He was involved in many enterprises, was a merchant with two stores in Greensboro, one in Statesville, and one in Lexington, NC. Around 1830, he built the Mt. Hecla cotton mill, the first steam powered cotton mill in the South. It was an enormous enterprise, that provided work for a large humber of people in the area. Mr. Humphreys was also involved in the Greensboro city government, and was a very active member of the Buffalo Presbyterian Church. He first lived at Blandwood (which was later transformed into a grand Italianate manor by his step daughter's husband, Governor John Motley Morehead), and then he built a three story mansion at the corner of Elm and Market Streets, facing the court house square in the center of Greensboro around 1827.
Mr. Humphreys was twice married, first to Mary Baldwin of Caswell County, who died c. 1820. He then married Letitia Harper (1785-1835), the widow of Robert Lindsay, Jr. (1776-1818) on 7 Nov. 1821. There were two children born of the first marriage, Louisa, who died young, and Anne Laura "Nancy" Humphreys (30 May 1817-22 May 1864, Mrs. Thomas Randolph Tate, bur. Elmwood cemetery, Charlotte, NC). There were three children born of the second marriage: Absalom T. Humphreys (1822-6 Nov. 1844), Henry Park Humphreys (1825-10 March 1832), who was killed in an accident at an early age, and Sarah Letitia "Sallie" Humphreys (1830-1860, Mrs. William B. Walton).
