      Paul Carrington
He was the son of "Coronel (County Militia)" George & Anne Mayo Carrington of "Boston Hill", Cumberland County, VA. He was the first born on March 5, 1733 according to the family bible. At "Boston Hill" Paul was home tutored and later studied law under Col. Clement Read, his future father-in-law. His license to practice law was signed May of 1756 by Peyton Randolph, John Randolph & George Wythe & in that year Lt. Gov. Dinwiddie appointed him "King's Attorney" for Bedford County which position he also held later for Mecklenburg and Lunenburg Counties. For the years 1765-1776 he was elected to the House of Burgesses and subsequently was appointed to the House of Delegates. Additionally he was a member of the Virginia Revolutionary Conventions of 1775 & 76 and served in the VA Senate for 1776 & 1778. His other appointments included membership on the powerful VA Committee of Safety. In 1779 he was appointed 2nd Judge of the General Court from which post he was elevated to Judge of the Court of Appeals. In 1789 he was elected Judge of the reorganized Court of Appeals from which post he resigned in 1807. He helped to found the Prince Edward Academy in 1775 later renamed Hampden-Sydney College and served as a trustee for 43 years. His home and the seat of his extensive holdings was named "Mulberry Hill". It eventually encompased over 2,800 acres. Other lands were purchased and provided to his children born to his first wife, Margaret. In his last will he left the remainder of his estate to his three living children by his second wife. The oldest of those three, Henry Carrington, was selected to be the executor of the will. The two marriages were: (1) 1755-Margaret Read (died May 1766) & (2) 1792-Priscilla Sims (died-1803). Both wives are buried in the plantation cemetery. A child not shown below is Martha Carrington (infant death).
