    Richard Carter (-1795) married Susanna Bigger in Prince Edward County 29 December (bond) 1772. Susanna, as administratrix, delivered the inventory of Richard's estate of taken 18 February 1796. Susanna married second David Powell 17 November 1796, and Powell became guardian to her three younger children, Richard, Samuel, and Nancy, by September 1797. A chancery suit of November 1796 identified Richard?s heirs as John Carter, who was then of age, and minors, Thomas, Lemuel, William, Mary, Richard, Samuel, and Nancy

    Halifax Co., Virginia Deed Francis Brandon gives his daughter Catherine land to service his named grandchildren William T., Eliza H., Thomas O. and Mary Ann Catherine and
    any other of her children. Dated 1831; The marriage Record
    for Richard Carter and Catherine Brandon is 1822. If these
    children are listed as the grandchildren of Francis
    Brandon, f/o Catherine who married Richard Carter, then

    Richard Carter's Inventory is 5 pages in length, and shows the fabrics and 25 slaves. It is concerned with household items, such as Table Cloths and salt sellers, earthen ware, 1 case of knives and forks, 6 feather bedsteads and furniture. Items indicate a lavish household, for the time.

    Richard Carter is shown in records as donating supplies which include many casks of Brandy, during the Revolutionary War. There is a Chancery Suit between Waddill Carter's Widow Mildred Wade (Lewis) which is about the proceeds of the earnings from the still. I thought it interesting that the source of the Brandy donated by Richard is now known to have come from his father's still, which was also owned by Richard's brother, Waddill. - mfe
