Generation: 1
1. | PATRIOT William of Pittsylvania Nealey/Neeley was born Bef 1710, Likely Ireland; died 21 Jul 1788, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Notes:
Proximity Evidence suggests that William is Robert's son, or brother. A William Neale is found in 1757 owning land in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania and on a tax list with Hugh Reynolds, William Devin; William is the Father of Mary Neale who marries Hugh Reynolds at Muddy Run, Martic, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. John Neally of County of Augusta in Colony of Virginia of one part and Robert Neally of County of Pittsylvania in aforesaid Colony of other part... for 100 pounds, 189 acres on South Side of Tomehawk Creek...corner of William Neallys Land, up said creek by Lands of William Neally in part of a Tract the said John Neally purchased of Col. Jno. Chiswell. Wit: WILLIAM MCCLENEEHAN, WILLIAM NEELLEY, WM. NEULLEY
William Neale sells land to Hugh Reynolds, located with Ball and Devin as reference.
Robert Neale appears as an early land-owner in Halifax and Pittsylvania.
Nealeys found in Roanoke Co., [now] are James and John, each marrying Daniel Evans daughters, Susannah and Catherine
Birth:
In 1757 a William Nealey is living in Lancaster Co., PA where he is patented 300 acres of land. He is found on tax and other records with Hugh Reynolds, and William Devin and in the Cuthbertson diaries with the McClanahans.
James Neeley, possibly the brother of William of Pittsylvania married Jane Grimes 23 May 1740 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their child, Sarah Neeley married William McClanahan 7 May 1769 in Botetourt Co., VA
Name:
William Nealey died in Pittsylvania Co., Va in 1788; he was a resident of Pittsylvania Co. from as early as 1766. John Nealey of Augusta, Robert Nealey is also found in Pittsylvania County; deeds of Pittsylvania prove these men are related. James Neally and John Neally are found as 1st settlers of Roanoke County and said to have founded it. Robert is named by genealogists as 'the Founder'. This then proves the Augusta Neallys are related to the Roanoke and Pittsylvania Nealeys.
William married Mrs. William Nealey/Neeley. Mrs. was born Bef 1710, Probably Pennsylvania; died Aft 1740. [Group Sheet]

These lists were taken from a typewritten copy found in the Clerk's Office, Pittsylvania County, at Chatham, Virginia. The two following affidavits found attached to the copy are self- explanatory.
I, S. H. F. Jones, do hereby certify that about the year 1930 I personally copied and had checked the names of persons who took the oath of Allegiance in 1777 as shown by manuscripts then in the Clerk's Office of Pittsylvania County, Virginia. The writing was faded and a few names could not be deciphered. Every effort was made to transcribe the names as they appeared on the manuscripts. The names of the foregoing Lists are a true and correct copy of the aforesaid manuscripts to the best of my knowledge and belief. The lists were also checked by Mr. Langhorne Jones, atty.
Given under my hand and seal this 8th day of November, 1939.

John Devin Reynolds is the 2nd son of Joseph M. Reynolds and his wife, Margaret Devin. Named for his Uncle John, and his Mother's Maiden name [Devin], he was born in 1783. He died 18 Mar 1831. His death was not an easy one. He writhed in agony from what we know today, as kidney stones, and after 9 days, finally succumbed to his exhaustion. His wife, described his agony and mortification in a letter to her daughter, Herodias in Missouri.
Because John's father, Joseph M. Reynolds had two wives, he enjoyed the company of 17 siblings. Eldest brother, Hugh is beginning his family in the same year his father produces his final heir.
Absolute documented proof, and multiple dna matches, confirm the father of Joseph M. Reynolds, and grandfather of John Devin Reynolds, is Hugh Reynolds of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Pittsylvania County Virginia.
