    John Stewart, Longhunter 1744-1770
    January 2 at 7:24am · Yuma, AZ

Brothers John and Dale Carter along with their cousin Thomas Carter had settled on the north side of Clinch River near Blackmore's Fort about 1772. It was a tense time among the scattered settlers along the Clinch River. The Carter?s land grants were surveyed for them and entered in the Fincastle Survey Book on March 26, 1774.

On the same day, Logan, sent a raiding party against Fort Blackmore which secretly approached the fort and got within 75 yards before being discovered. Most of the men at Fort Blackmore were sitting on some logs a short distance from the gate. The Indians decided to make a bold push and enter the fort before the men could recover from their surprise. Creeping along the river bank, they were just ready to push into the fort when they were discovered by Dale Carter (1744-1774), who was about fifty-five steps from the fort and who cried, "Murder! Murder!"

Upon hearing Carter's alarm, the men (only ten militia men were actually stationed at Fort Blackmore) ran towards the fort and succeeded in reaching the gate before the Indians. Frustrated in their designs of entering the fort they turned upon Dale Carter. One Indian shot at him, but missed him; another shot him through the thigh, inflicting a wound which rendered him too lame to escape into the fort. Another Indian ran up to Carter, tomahawked and scalped him.

Meanwhile, John Carter b1752, brother of Dale Carter, and (later Colonel) John Anderson (1750-1817) serving as an ensign in the local militia attached to Blackmore's Fort left the security of the fort under fire to try to rescue a Dale Carter. Too late to prevent his death, they tried to prevent the Indian's scalping of the body. Anderson shot at the Indians who were involved in scalping the dead Carter, and John Carter shot at another. The Indians returned fire at narrowly missing both men. By this time, other men of the fort had climbed into the nearest bastion and had begun firing at the Indians. The Indians fled into the woods, free from pursuit due to the fort?s inadequate garrison.

Soon after Captains Daniel Boone (1734-1820) and Daniel Smith (1757-1824) brought thirty men to Fort Blackmore to track down the Indians. Near the fort they found many tracks, but the tracks were lost in the forest and the Indians were never captured.

As Captain David Looney (1735-1810) had been away from Fort Blackmore at his home near Kingsport at the time of Dale Carter's murder, the settlers at Fort Blackmore wanted a leader who lived nearby. They petitioned the highest officer in Fincastle County, Colonel William Preston (1730-1778), to make Daniel Boone a captain, and give him control of Fort Blackmore, Moore's Station, and Cowan's Fort. This petition was approved.

John Carter, brother of the Dale Carter, who was killed at Blackmore?s Fort in 1774, had settled on a 400 acre tract of land on the northwest side of Clinch River, about 4 miles below Blackmore?s Fort, in Scott County in the year 1773. He had married a daughter of Joseph Blackmore and had seven children.

One of the more tragic incidents in early Southwestern Virginia history was the death of Elizabeth Carter and her six children, by Indians in 1787. Plundering and setting fire to the Carter?s home, it reduced the bodies of his wife and children to ashes.

    R. M. Addington, History of Scott County, page 99, says: In a short time after moving to his farm, having planted his crop, and completing such other preparations as were necessary to move back to the fort, he went out one morning to listen for his horses and cattle, which had bells on, intending to collect them up prior to moving back to Fort Blackmore on the next day. This was locust year, and he went out early in order to collect his stock before the locust began their noises. He had proceeded about sixty yards from his house when he heard his wife cry out, "Oh John". Turning he saw eight or nine Indians entering his house, and at the same time they fired at him. Realizing his perilous situation, he thought it best to make his escape and go for assistance, rather than fight and exasperate the savages in an unequal contest. Hastening to the fort, he collected a company and returned to his house, which he found in flames. With some poles, his companions succeeded in pulling out of the burning coals the charred remains of his wife and six children, which they buried. When they had done this, they heard a plaintive groaning a little ways from the house, in the weeds and grass. They went to the place from whence the sounds came and found his little daughter, about ten years of age, with an awful gash across her abdomen and her entrails falling out. They carried her to the river and washed her, but she died before they finished. (Judge Wood and Peter Honeycutt?s Letter, Draper MSS 4 C 27)

GENEALOGIES OF VIRGINIA FAMILIES From the William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. I. Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1982. Page 602-603.

"Henry Carter (Thomas (1)), born 1674, died 1743. In a deposition made April 8, 1743, Henry Carter stated that he was about 69 years of age. Sometime prior to 1704 he married Anne Harris, as shown by a lease for 200 acres of land , dated Nov. 9, 1704, from Henry Carter and wife Ann "who was daughter of Gainey Harris late of this county Gent, who by his will dated 14 th April, 1693, left the above mentioned premises to his daughter Ann". From 1728 to 1740 "Mr. Henry Carter" was continuously a Justice of the County Court. April 5, 1737, Henry Carter and brother Joseph were two of eleven signers to a memorial complaining of the misrepresentation of Wm. Ball, Jr., Gent. who had been a Justice of Lancaster for nine years and then omitted from the Commission because of misrepresentation.

"Henry Carter was a vestryman of Christ Church and before his death in 1743 he was one of six vestrymen to meet with a like number from St. Mary's White Chapel to form a general vestry for the two parishes. His brother Joseph Carter was a vestryman from St. Mary's at the same time....March 21, 1732, "Henry Carter of the County of Lancaster Gent." made his will which was probated Oct. 10, 1743. He left home plantation and negro, Courtney, to son Gainy; negroes Tom and Jack to three daughters and son Robert all of whom were to have the right to remain at home till the daughters married and Robert arrived at the age of sixteen. Daughters also to have two beds and furniture and their mother's jewelry - Catherine the biggest gold ring, Ann the lesser ring, and Elizabeth the gold bobbs; Son John to have a chest in the "outward room", a new hat, his silver cup, and a ten shilling piece of gold he had from his mother Katharine Dale to make him a mourning ring; Son Harry his little trunk, new dugget coat and breeches and dimity and linen clothes; son Josiah, horse named Jack, a steere, new saddle and bridle; son Robert, the smallest bed and furniture upstairs. All to share equally in the rest of the estate. Brother Thomas Carter to have his silver seal. Desires that his "Cousin Thomas Carter" assist son Gainy in managing the negroes. This would seem to indicate that Capt. Thomas Carter Sr. had a brother who had descendants in that part of Virginia. There was a family of Carters in Middlesex county, contemporaneous with Capt. Thomas Carter and his sons, who had similar given names to those in Lancaster. Henry Carter's personal estate contained besides the usual furniture, and jewelry mentioned in the will, a large amount of clothing, 15 books, a pair of silver shoe buckles, a viol, twelve leather chairs, 2 pewter flower pots, etc."

Henry married Anne Davis. Anne was born Est 1680, Lancaster Co., Virginia Colony; died 1743, White Chapel Parish, Barford Plantation, Corotoman River, Lancaster, Colony of Virginia. [Group Sheet]

The difficulty of tracing the genealogical ramifications of this numerous Lancaster county family- is enhanced by the fact that it sprang from two fountain-heads, Col. John Carter of "Corrotoman" and Capt. Thomas Carter of "Barford". These gentlemen were undoubtedly related. The following notes, which are confined to the points of contact of the Carters and Paynes, are based on Court records, on articles in W .M., on the excellent Carter Genealogy by Dr. Joseph Lyon Miller, and on my correspondence with members of my family related to the Carters. George Payne (3) m. Sarah, dau. of Mr. John Carter of We. Co. and w. Anne Claytor. Mr. and Mrs. Carter had 11 children-Mary, m. Presley Neale < 1783; Robert, m. Mrs. Nancy Spilman 1795; Anne, m. The heirs at law of the John Carter who died in Smith Co, Tn in 1803 but whose Will is filed in Russell Co. VA are all proven descendants of Peter and Judith Norris Carter out of Fauquier Co, VA. At least one of the children of Dale Carter who was killed at Blakemore's Fort in 1774, also appears to have claimed a portion of John Carter's estate. [Russell Co DBK 7 p. 131 ] showing a probability that this Dale was the son of Peter and Judith Norris Carter and not the son of Charles Sr. and Lucy Carter as has been claimed.

Marriage contract of John Champe, Jr., of Lambs Creek, and Ann Carter of King George County. As part of the contract Ann received the slave Diana as a gift and John received land and unnamed slaves in Prince William County.

    Died:
At Charles Carter Sr's. death in 1766 in Amherst Co. VA., he names five children. One daughter Susanna died and left a will in Washington Co., VA 15 January 1781. Elizabeth, as shown above, died in 1787, leaving Dale, John and Charles as the other children named. In 1797, the year of the death of Lucy Carter Blakemore, John Carter of Russell Co., VA. was appointed administrator of the estate of Elizabeth Carter [Russell Co. Law order Book 2 pg 379]. It would seem that under the laws of inheritance, Elizabeth had no estate until the death of her mother, and that estate would have passed to the 10 year old daughter who survived her mother by a few hours, and then to the child's father John Carter. -Margie Brown

WILLIAM CARTER married Frances Curtis, daughter of Rice Curtis, Sr., "Gent." of .Spotsylvania, prior to November 20, 1761, as on that date he had a deed from Rice Curtis, Jr., that shows this marriage. Wm. Carter appeared in a list of Spotsylvania slave owners in 1783 as owner of ten
servants. His will, probated in Spotsylvania November 26, 1802, mentions his wife Frances Carter, daughters Lucy Aylett, Elizabeth Belinda, Sarah wife of Edmund Foster, Frances wife of Rice Connor; sons Rice, John and John's daughter Polly, Guilford D., Kenyon, and Abraham; stepmother Hannah Carter; and half sister Elizabeth Carter. He also had a daughter who married James Hume, as September 15, 1794, Wm. Carter made a deed of gift to James Hume for four negroes in trust for Wm. Lewis Hume, son of the said James and grandson of the said Wm. Carter. September 1, 1789, he made a deed of gift to his son John for 216 acres of land in Berkeley Parish.
In 1788 John Carter was married to Mary Herndon, born May 4, 1770, and still living in 1834. John Carter's will, probated in Spotsylvania October 2, 1815, mentions wife, daughter "Polly" and sons Joseph, John, and James. Friend John W. Herndon executor. Polly Carter married, September 24, 1830, .Captain Thomas M. Horn. Mary Herndon Carter was a daughter of Joseph Herndon, of "Mattaponi," Spotsylvania, and his second wife Mary Minor, whom he married August 15, 1765.
She was a daughter of John and Sarah Scott Minor, and was born March 7, 1741, and died October 26, 1822. Joseph Herndon, born May 1, 1737, died October 28, 1810, lived on a beautiful estate about six miles southeast of Fredericksburg. He was a 'graduate of the University of Edinburgh, and took a prominent part in the political life of his county. For further notice of the Herndons see the Virgin£a Historical Magazine, Vols. IX., X., -and XI.
JOHN CARTER was commissioned captain in the Spotsylvania Militia September 18, 1777. Owned nine servants in 1783 before his father's death. May 1, 1794, Captain John Carter and wife Mary and sister Margaret Marshall, widow ,deeded twenty-eight acres of land formerly belonging to their father, John Carter, Sr., to Dr. Robert Wellford. He died in Spotsylvania about 1812, but I have no copy of his will.

FRANCES CARTER married Rice Curtis, III.. 3 son of Rice Curtis, Jr. (will probated 1774), who was a son of Rice Curtis. Sr. (will probated 1753). and his wife Elizabeth.. August 27. 1779. Rice Curtis made a deed to his children named as follows: Nancy. John, Elizabeth, Mary, Frances Margaret, George Bartemeus, and James. Mentions wife Frances Carter Curtis. No further data.

Regarding the descendants of Captain John Carter, Sr ., of Spotsylvania, and his two wives (Miss Armistead, of Caroline, and Hannah Chew, daughter of Captain John and Margaret Beverley Chew, of Spotsylvania, and granddaughter of Captain Harry Beverley) , his great-granddaughter by the second marriage, Mrs. J. N .Hook, Clemsen College, S. C., has supplied interesting data from old letters and an account of the family prepared about 1845 by a grandson of Captain Carter-Hon. Norborne E. Sutton, of Caroline.
Captain Carter',s home was near the Spotsylvania-Caroline line about sixteen miles west of Bowling Green. It is said to have been a large brick house, and that he lived there in considerable style. In the division of the property a£ter his death the house and 142 acres of the home plantation fell to the share of Mrs. Margaret Chew Talliaferro, who was the only one of his children who removed from Virginia. Her sister, Mrs. Burton Talliaferro, however rented it instead of building on her own portion. The old mansion was burned in 1825, and the bricks sold later for other purposes. Major Benjamin Alsop, writing in 1827 to Mr. Zachariah Talliaferro, says: "YOUR place is truly unlucky after the mansion house was burnt, Mrs. Lucy Talliaferro repaired the Overseers house and livd in that and a few days before last Christmas it took fire and was burnt down. She is still living on the land near where the old house stood, has put a Chimney to the Carriage house & is living in that in a Very uncomfortable manner." He continues, "Mrs. Talliaferro talks very Much of Coming to your Country as soon as she gets her" Matters rounded up." "We have had a very Cold Winter the coldest we have had for many years and at this time (March, 1827,) our roads are almost impassible."
In November , 1829, he writes: "Horace Marshall is broke and sold out. Was in Philadelphia the last I heard of him." (He was Captain Carter's grandson.) "Mrs. Mary B. Stevens has become very poor. She is living with her son Lewis at present. Lucy Stevens is with Mrs. L. Talia£erro." * ~ * "Capt. Stanard is still here, but in bad health." In January, 1830, he wrote: "With respect to your Old Acquaintances I will Endeavor to give you some Account. Larkin Stanard is still living-he has a Sore leg, which keeps him Confind. Henry C. Coleman is living in Caroline, Wm. & Zach. T. Wilson has been dead several years, the children of Wm. Taliaferro are all living but the oldest son Walker he has been dead sometime; the daughters all Married. Some doing pretty well & some badly. One of the daughters is dead and left 2 or 3 children. Your old friend James Carter is still living and well the last I heard of him. Capt. Jones & his wife are dead & the land sold and the children Squandered off. Col. Coleman's widow & her Children has moved to Kentucky, we have lately heard her oldest Son is dead. So goes the World some Coming in Others Going Out." Other letters show that Mrs. Hannah Carter died in 1821', leaving a personal estate valued at about $7,000.00 ; and that her son Robert and daughter Elizabeth died prior to 1827 unmarried.
    - About 1845 Mr. Sutton prepared a brief account of the descendants of his greatgrandfather, John Carter, in some of the branches of the family, from which the data here given is mainly taken. He mentioned no children of his own. He stated that his greatgrand£ather, John Carter, was an officer in the Revolution, and gave it on the authority of family tradition and the word of an officer who told him that he had served with him.
. MARY BEVERLEYG CARTER married Captain Richard Stevens, of Spotsylvania, and had issue-Lucy, Lewis, Robert, Hiram, Richard, Horace, Polly, and Judith. All married but the two younger sons, but I have no data of their descendants.
MARGARET CHEW CARTER , born January 14, 1771, in Spotsylvania, Virginia, died May 19, 1822, at her home, "Mt. Jolly," three miles £rom Pendleton, South Carolina. July 31, 1802, she was married to Zachariah Taliaferro, an old bachelor lawyer of South Carolina. He was born in Caroline county, Va, April .28, 1759, and died in South Carolina April 14, 1831.
ANNE CARTER married Wm. Heslop and. had a son Horace, and possibly other children.
SARAH CARTER married William Sutton, of Caroline county

On page 102 it was stated that Margaret Chew Carter, daughter"of John and Hannah Chew Carter, of Spotsylvania, was the wife of Captain John Marshall. She was the wife of Zachariah Taliaferro, of South Carolina, and had a half sister, Margaret Carter, who was the wife of Captain Marshall.
The illustrations for the April Quarterly were accidentally omitted, and will be given here.***
Who is This John Carter ? JOHN CARTER was twice married,
but had issue only by the first wife, who is thought to have been a Miss Spencer. He married second, in 1757, Mary, "widow of Mr. Thomas Pollard." In her will, dated February, 10, 1792, "Mary Carter, widow of John Carter, dec'd," left all her property to her children, Thomas and James Pollard and Mary Pollard James. The personal estate of "John Carter of Corotoman River Planter" was divided between his wife Mary Carter and his four children on March 25, 1783. This estate amounted to ? 237 6s. 6d, and included six negroes and a good lot of furniture contained in the following rooms: "The hall, the Chamber , the Red Room, the Upstairs, the kitchen, and the Sellar." He owned "a great Bible, 2 sermon Books, a Hymn Book and a parcel of old books." John Carter had issue :
John Cammack; b,1738 possibly in Spotsylvania County, Va.; m, Nancy Miller: A son
James b, 1769 in Spotsylvania Co., Va.; m, Susan Carter: A
daughter Cynthia b, 1819 in Bardstown, Ky.; m, my gggrandfather Franklin Peck Bishop. They both died and are buried in West Union, Fayette Co, Iowa.

THE FOLLOWING INFO. BELOW CAME FROM THE TRIGG BOOK I QUESTION SOME OF THE DATES,.BUT THIS IS HOW THEY APPEAR IN THE BOOK
NOTE:JKT -By Lester White. Copy of a document enclosed. Written on old ledger paper in pencil by some person apparently very much advanced in years. J.B. Trigg signed this document.

    Dear Friend :

Your of a few days ago is at hand and in answer will say that I don't know as who Wm. Trigg wife was as I can find no record to show her maiden name, but I know it was ANN. We have an old Bible date of 1812 and records of birth and death and marriages of Thomas Trigg family to the present day. The birth of Thomas Trigg, my Grandfather, is not recorded in it. His death is. He died 17 Jul. 1852, age 69 years, hence born in 1783. My Grandfather Thomas Trigg married Matilda Carter, 5 Oct. 1809. and only raised two children. Joseph W. Trigg and Isaac E. Trigg who was my father. I am the only son living out of five, 3 of my brothers and sisters died young. I had a brother 8 years older than myself killed during the war, accidentally in his 16th year, killed in 1864. My father Isaac E. Trigg married Catherine M. Fox on the 25th of Jan. 1838. My uncle, Joseph W. Trigg, also married my Mothers sister Amanda Fox and there are only two children, John W. Trigg and Lucy Matilda Trigg who married A.B. Hawkins. They both have quite a family. This is the only Trigg family living in Spotsylvania Co. There are a good many in the State of Virginia. I am confident there is no other old Trigg residence in this County, but the place I live in. You ask about the Trigg burying ground. The only Trigg burial ground I know of is on this place and in our garden.

Now in regard to the Brock connections I will send you some old records which will be more satisfactory to you than anything I could write you. I am always willing to throw the light on things that I can. When Mrs. Miller of Albemarle was here she was very anxious to find out who married Polly Trigg, my grandfather's sister and you will see from these old papers I send you that she married William Carter who was a brother to my grandma Trigg. I shall not attempt to write any more of the Brock line as I will send papers that will be more satisfactory to you. Now in regards to the children helping you the three girls are living in Washington D.C. My family consists of only six, so you see there are only three of us at home. My wife and youngest child, a boy of 13 years of age and myself.

Now in conclusion I will send you these old papers with understanding that you, within a reasonable time return them to me safely and in good condition which I think is your reasonable duty. Hoping that you will get them safely and that they may be safely returned. I am very respectfully,
    Your friend,

    J. B. Trigg

P.S. This Catherine Chew Brock whose WILL I send you, owned quite a large landed estate as well as a good many negroes. The old Brock residence is 13 miles from Frederick and on the railroad leading to Orange Court House. John W. Trigg, who is double first cousin of mine lives in the old house which I suppose is 150 years old if not older. There is on this place a large graveyard of Brocks and Carters and my uncle J.W. Trigg and wife are also buried there. At some future time, I will examine the records at the Clerk Office and try and find out what my grandfathers, fathers name was and from who this place was bought from or whether it came out of land grant from the Sovereign of England. The deed from William Trigg and Ann his wife, 13 Jan. 1808 to my grandfather, Thomas Trigg and his wife Matilda Trigg.

NOTE:-JKT. The above William and Ann Hampton Trigg settled in Montgomery Co. TN. In a letter 30 Aug. 1923, to Mr. L.F. White & Sons, Red Oak, TX. from Mrs. J.B. Trigg RFD 1, Chancellor, VA. Box 40. J.B. Trigg died about 1919.

The home of Col. Joseph Brock located near Brock Rd. VA. Toppleneck was a marriage dower of Mary Beverly Chew when she married Joseph Brock. Toppleneck was a part of a land grant of George of England to Larkin Chew.
