    RETIRED LEAF FIRM OFFICIAL DIES HE SPENT 44 YEARS WITH UNIVERSAL LEAF

    John Nelson Leavell, a retired international tobacco expert and vice president of Universal Leaf Tobacco Co. Inc., died Saturday after a lengthy illness. He was 83 and lived in Richmond.

    "During his 44 years as a tobacconist, Mr. Leavell was widely recognized and respected for his tobacco expertise and his vast experience in the Far East, the Philippines and Taiwan," said Henry H. Harrell, chairman and chief executive officer of Universal Corp. "He eventually assumed responsibility for what was then the Japan Monopoly, a most important business venture for Universal."

    A native of Louisville, Ky., Mr. Leavell joined Universal Leaf in 1932 as a buyer and supervisor for Southwestern Tobacco Co., a ULT subsidiary in Kentucky.

    In 1953, he was transferred to sales at Universal's Richmond office. He was promoted to assistant vice president in 1957 and to vice president in 1970. He retired in 1976.

    Mr. Leavell was a graduate of the Episcopal High School in Alexandria and attended the University of Virginia. During World War II, he was a gunnery officer in the Navy and served in the Pacific Theater.

    Mr. Leavell was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church and the Country Club of Virginia.

    His wife, Louise Cooper Leavell, died in 1980. Survivors include two daughters, Louise Leavell Harris of Richmond and Elizabeth Leavell Hannay of Dallas.

    A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Old St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 12291 River Road. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

    The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church Cemetery Fund, Richmond, Va. 23233.

    John married Louise Talbot Cooper 10 Nov 1934, Louisville, Kentucky . Louise was born 19 Mar 1913, Monterrey, Mexico; died 25 Jul 1980, Richmond, Virginia; was buried , Saint Mary's Episcopal Church Cemetery Goochland County, Virginia. [Group Sheet]
