Died about 1782 at about age 82 in Caroline, Virginia
James was probably born in Virginia. Some cite his birthplace as Glouscester County, VA. His father, Caleb, was in Essex County by about 1713 when he was paid[1] for killing a wolf. James married Sarah Daniel before 16 February 1719 in Essex County, Virginia, when William Daniel made a deed[2] of gift of land to "my son-in-law james Lindsey". She was born about 1700 in Essex County, Virginia. James appears in deed and court records in Essex County, VA starting in 1719 and frequently in Caroline County, VA court records after Caroline was created in 1728. James was a farmer and slave owner in Caroline County, VA residing a few miles south of Port Royal in the south east corner of that county.
James and Sarah had ten children whose births recorded in their family bible which was transcribed from the original by their son Reuben Lindsay who also transcribed James' will. After the death of Sarah Daniel Lindsay around 1747, James married Lucy Warner or Ware and had one more child.
Children and their birth dates listed in family bible of James and Sarah Daniel Lindsay transcribed by Reuben Lindsay son of James and Sarah Daniel Lindsay and reprinted in a book by a descendant[3]. There seem to be some repetitious dates in the days and months these children were born so a copy of the book referred to should be examined to validate these dates as this information has probably been copied over and over again and may have been corrupted:

Will of James Lindsay, transcribed by his son, Reuben Lindsay and reprinted by a descendant[4]:
In the name of God Amen; I, James Lindsay, of St. Mary's Parish and in county of Caroline, being sick and weak in body, but of sound mind and memory do make this my last will and testment.
First, I lend to my loving wife, Lucy Lindsay, during her natural life two negroes to wit; a fellow named Sam and a woman named Millie, also two feather beds and furniture, two chests, seven flag botton chairs, an oak desk and table, one copper still and all my earthenware, two iron pots and hooks, all my pewter, six knives and forks, one bel metal skillet, one frying pan, a woman's side saddle and bridle, one ox cart, a bay horse and bay mare, ten head of cattle, including the oxen, ten head of hogs to her choice, ten head of sheep, two spinning wheels and cards, such as she chooses, and a case of bottles.
Secondly, my will and desire is that my wife may have in her life the sole use of houses where I now live and also liberty to work her lands or negroes on the land during her natural life.
Thirdly, I will and order that all the remainder of my houses and personal estate not lent as above, be sold by my executors after mentioned, as soon after my death as they think proper and that the money arising from such sale shall be devided equally among my surviving children hereafter named to wit; John, Daniel, and Rueben Lindsay, Elizabeth and Sarah Coleman, Mary O'Neal, Sukie Reynolds, and one eighth part of above estate not lent, I give to be equally divided among my son Jacob Lindsay's children, to them and their heirs. Item, I will and desire that the negroes, stock, and household goods, which I have lent my loving wife, shall at her death be sold by me ex., and the money arising from such sale be equally devided among my surviving children first named to wit; John, Daniel, and Rueben Lindsay, Elizabeth and Sarah Coleman, Mary O'Neal, Sukie Reynolds, the eighth part to be equally divided among debts, among my surviving children above mentioned and the eighth part of the estate I give to be equally divided amongst the children of my deceased son, Jacob Lindsay, as before mentioned.
(Ends here. Unfortunately, the transcriber did not include the portion which named the executors, date of the will and names of the witnesses.)
On October 12, 1782, a newspaper reported that James Lindsay of Caroline Co., was deceased and that his executors Danial and Reuben Lindsay would be selling some of his property. They also requested the attendance of John Lindsay of North Carolina and the heirs of Jacob Lindsay of Pittsylvania Co.[5]
