- [S16] Lucian W. Hiner, Jr.
David Champness Williams owned a plantation at Sycamore in northeastern Pittsylvania County very near the Halifax County line bordering on the Banister River where Elkhorn Creek empties into the Banister. From reading the will of David Champness Williams it is difficult to determine the exact acreage but it appears to have been between 600 and 800 acres with an undetermined number of slaves. The plantation raised tobacco and had a blacksmith and sawmill which were apparently operated by slaves.
I have a copy of a WPA cemetery project done as I recall in 1937 which located the original Williams cemetery which was in poor condition. The stone walls had collapsed, it was overgrown and several of the stones could only be partially read, This may be why some inaccurate dates were reported by some researchers. The site today is a large privately owned farm. I have located the general area of the cemetery and if I ever get a chance will seek permission from the current owners to pin point and visit it.
