As far as I can tell, these Carters are not related to me. My interest is in their dealings with the Cottrell family of Bedford, Virginia. Specifically, I am looking for some insight on William and Josiah Carter.

1824 James Cotrell married Mary 'Polly' Carter a daughter of William Carter with Josiah Carter, Jr. surety. James was a son of Susannah Cotrell. Both Susannah Cottrell and William Carter gave their consent for James Cottrell to marry Polly Carter. This would mean neither James Cottrell nor Mary carter was 21 at the time of the wedding. James and Mary (Carter) Cottrell removed to Montgomery, Ohio about 1833/34, then to Highland, Ohio by 1844, then to Pike, Ohio by 1850. James Cotrell died in Pike, Ohio on 2 Sep 1883 where his marker listed his age as 77yrs. The Pike, Ohio death registers show that Mary Cottrell died 3 Feb 1904 at the age of 99yrs-6mos-16dys.

1826 ? Thomas Cotteral gave a deposition in a Chancery Case involving Littleberry Carter, Braxton Carter, and William N. Sherman claiming "in 1822 he was at the house of Littleberry Carter and saw a beast"
In this Chancery Case, there is another affidavit by a Josiah Carter
1830 William McCann, son of Daniel McCann and Elizabeth Cottrell, married Elizabeth Carter, daughter of William Carter with James Cotrell surety. Daniel and Elizabeth (Cottrell) McCann removed to Pike, Ohio by the mid 1830s.

1832 - Thomas Cottrell is an administrator in the estate of Josiah Carter. Thomas Cottrell passed away 1835 in Bedford, Virginia.

1842 - James Cottrell, a son of Thomas Cottrell and Sarah Campbell, married Mary Ann Margaret Carter with Braxton Carter surety.

Can anyone elaborate on this William Carter and Josiah Carter family. Who did they marry, who were their parents, where were they from, where did they go? Are they the same William or Josiah Carter in the records with the Cottrell family?
