- MARY L. DEBUTTS, GRANDDAUGHTER OF GEN. LEE, DIES HEADED R.E. LEE MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION
Richmond Times-Dispatch (VA) - Thursday, December 29, 1994
A funeral for Mary Custis Lee deButts, the granddaughter of General Robert E. Lee and the president of the Robert E. Lee Memorial Association from 1965 to 1967, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Upperville. Burial will be in Ivy Hill Cemetery in Upperville.
Mrs. deButts died Monday at Nordley, her home in Upperville, after a lengthy illness. She was 94.
"Mrs. deButts was the Lee family representative on the board of directors of the Robert E. Lee Memorial Association from 1958 to 1982, when she became an honorary director," said her longtime friend, Mary Tyler McClenahan of Richmond.
The association is the governing body and raises funds to operate Stratford Hall, the birthplace of Robert E. Lee.
"As president, Mrs. deButts was responsible for many improvements made on the plantation and helped establish a master plan for its future development," said McClenahan.
Mrs. deButts graduated from Foxcroft School and later served on its board. She was an artist who studied in New York, Paris and Florence.
Mrs. deButts was a former president of the Fauquier Loudoun Garden Club and was a founder of both the Upperville Garden Club and the Upperville Library.
Her husband, W. Hunter deButts, died in 1987.
Survivors include two sons, W. Hunter deButts Jr. of Upperville and Robert L. Lee deButts of Norfolk, and a daughter, Mrs. Holly DeButts Spencer of Upperville.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Robert E. Lee Memorial Association, Stratford, Va. 22558 or to Foxcroft School, Middleburg, Va. 22117.
