Elizabeth "Bettie" Johnson was born 1848 near Chatham, Pittsylvania County, VA, the youngest of 2 daughters born to James Johnson (ca. 1805-1855) and Jane D. Barnes. Her only sister, Ellen Johnson (1845-1921) would marry Dr. Rawley Wight Matin, CSA, of Pittsylvania County who served as Lt. Col. with the 53rd Virginia Regiment, and was wounded and captured in 1863, spending some time in federal prisons, was exchanged, and became Confederate prison director at Columbia, SC from 1864-1865.

Bettie was about age 7 when her father died and her mother (who was almost 20 years younger than her father), soon remarried Tarpley White, clerk of court in Pittsylvania County, and one of the many prominent White family in that area. Bettie and Ellen were raised by Tarpley White, and several children were born of this second union.

Bettie was just 15 years old when she wed William T. Clark on April 6, 1864, who was then a wealthy 26-year old tobacco planter. The couple would remain on his family plantation, "Pineville" where they would become parents of 6 known children, and a 7th born after relocating to Wilson, NC:

      James Johnson Clark (1865-1924),
      William Thomas Clark Jr. (1867-1939),
      John Augustine Clark (1869 - aft 1900)
      Ellen Douglass Clark (1871 - aft 1910)
      Jane Tarpley Clark (1873-1897)
      Elizabeth "Lizzy" Clark (ca. 1878)
      Mary Garland Clark (1882-1898)

The couple remained in Chatham until about 1880, when they relocated to Wilson, NC where William helped to build the Tobacco Industry in Wilson, no doubt with connections to his in-laws, the Tredways and Hughes.

In 1897 her daughter, Jane Tarpley Clark, died at age 24. Less than a year later, Bettie was widowed in May of 1898 when her husband of 34 years died at age 60. Then, a little over 2 months later in August 1898, her youngest daughter Mary Garland Clark, died at age 16. Bettie would survive another 8 years, remaining in Wilson until her death in 1906 at age 58. Her surviving sons, and daughter Ellen Douglass Clark, would remain in Wilson as well.
