HAMPTON - John Ferguson Gayle, M.D., 82, passed away Aug. 17, 1998. He was born in Newport News on Sept. 27, 1915, to the late Josiah Pitts Gayle of Spotsylvania County and his wife, Sally Ann Ferguson of Petersburg.
Upon graduation from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, he entered the University of Virginia, where he earned his medical degree in 1938. From 1938 until 1942, he interned at Norwood (Carroway Methodist) Hospital in Birmingham, Ala., and completed a residency at Elizabeth Buxton Hospital in Newport News, instructed in surgery at Emory University and Grady hospitals in Atlanta, Ga., and performed general surgery at Buxton Hospital.
He volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942, was commissioned as a flight surgeon and served until the end of World War II. He was a flight surgeon to various combat bomber units and commander of an aviation unit dispensary that entered Normandy and eventually entered Germany. He served in the famed 9th Air Force and earned battle stars for the Northern France, Ardennes and Rhineland campaigns. He was cited for outstanding combat medical service and, upon cessation of the war in Europe, was released from active duty to the active reserves as a major, flight surgeon, Medical Corps. He continued his medical education in obstetrics and gynecology in Baltimore, Md.
