He practiced in Pittsylvania County for a time and later in Halifax County. His first wife was Harriet T. White Her obit from the Lynchburg Virginian, June 9, 1828, p.3, col.5 reads: BARKSDALE, MRS. HARRIETT T. died May 3, 1828, age 24 years, at "Locust Hill" in Halifax County. She was the wife of Dr. Claiborne Barksdale. She was survived by her husband and 3 children. 2nd wife was Sallie Whitlock.
