      Whitewright, Grayson County, Texas
      Joseph R. Carter, the eight child of William Presley Carter and Jane Conway Gass Carter, was born Sept. 2, 1849 near Dandridge, Jefferson County, Tennessee, There were many Carter and Gass relatives in the area. In the 1850 Census, Joseph's family was enumerated in the nearby community of Strawberry Plains in Knox County, Tennessee. He was about ten years old in 1859 when his family joined the western migration to the State of Texas. His family first settled at Bonham in Grayson County and later moved to Sherman in Fannin County. In the early 1880's, he moved to the Canaan community north of town and later moved to Whitewright. "Mr. Carter was known to practically every man in this section. He was a member of the Methodist Church and prominent in lodge circles." In later years, he and his wife moved to Jacksonville to make their home with their daughter." He died in Jacksonville and was returned to Whitewright, Grayson County, Texas Funeral was held in the Methodist Church, buried in Whitewright City Cemetery.
