      The 1880 census recorded Edward R. Carter, 65, a farmer, living in Bastrop County, Texas, with wife Mary, 57, and children: Mary, 26; Lucy, 23; and William, 19. The three children were all born in Texas.

      The 1900 census recorded Edward R. Carter, 85, living in Elgin, Bastrop, Texas, with son William H. Carter, born July 1860 in Texas, daughter-in-law Bell[e], born Jan. 1877, and grandson Ned, born Aug 1895
