  Garland Edward Carter Garland Edward Carter, of 1111 Main Street, Stratford House, died Wednesday afternoon, February 11, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center. Born Oct. 6, 1906, in the Chestnut Level community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Halcotte Townes Carter and Nannie Richardson Carter. Mr. Carter was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy. In 1935, he was employed by J.M. Edmunds Company (now Virginia Tobacco Company). At his retirement in 1971, he was president and director of Virginia Tobacco Company. Mr. Carter was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, where he was a member of Class 20. He was a past master of Carter Masonic Lodge 323 and former board member of First Virginia Bank South. He was married to the former Catherine Bennett on May 29, 1928, who survives. In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by a daughter, Nancy Carter White of Montgomery, Ala.; two granddaughters, Cathy White Grogan of Danville and Julie W. Hirschberg of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a brother, Dr. Aubrey Carter of Everett, Wash.; three great-grandchildren, Kelly N. Grogan and Tommy Grogan, both of Danville, and Eric A. Hirschberg of Thousand Oaks, Calif. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jay Ashby. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery with Masonic rites by Carter Masonic Lodge 323.
