    1. [S10] R.W. Ryan.
Correspondence from Raymond W. Ryan to Mary Frances Eggleston

My great-grandfather, Patrick Paul Ryan, husband of Minerva, is the path to follow in regard to her mother, Elvira B. Boley, who is on the 1860 Census of Halifax Co., Va. as follows:

Schedule I. - Free Inhabitants in the Southern District in the County of Halifax of Virginia enumerated by me, on the 18th day of July 1860. Post Office: Halifax C. H.
773 755 Value of Real Estate Value of Personal Property
      Estate
      James Edwards 60 M 20000 6200
      Elvira B. Edwards 32 F [error: she was 52]
      Hs Edwards 19 F
      C. B. Edwards 16 M
      A. L. Edwards 20 M
      Arabella Edwards 12 F
      Monty B. Edwards 10 M

Elvira Boley Edwards husband, James M. Edwards, Sr., died April 1870, and she then moved in with her daughter, Minerva Anne, in the household of Minerva's husband, Paterick (sic Patrick) Ryan, shown on the 1870 Census as follows:
1870 United States Census, Port Deposit, Cecil County, Maryland, enumerated on the 2nd day of July 1870. J. Dixon West, Ass't Marshal.

Ryan, Ann 36, Keep house, born in Virginia
Ryan, Philip 14, Attends school, born in Virginia
Ryan, Mary 12, at home, born in Virginia
Ryan, William 10, at home, born in Virginia (my grandfather: William Thomas Ryan m. Minerva Anne Edwards)
Ryan, Virginia 8, born in Virginia
Ryan, Patrick 5, born in Virginia
Edwards, Elvira 63, none; Value of Personal Estate: 150, born in Virginia, widow.

By 1880 the Ryan family had moved from Maryland to Richmond, Virginia. I do not have the exact year but did find them on the 1880 Census.
The 1880 Census of Patrick & Minerva Ryan, and family of 10 children, enumerated on the first day of June, 1880, does not include Elvira Edwards. I have done many searches in Cecil County, Maryland as well as Richmond, Va. in an attempt to find the burial place of Elvira but, to this day, have yet to find any further information in her regard. But, at least, you now know that she lived many years beyond what is shown on the file you provided i.e. "died before 1860."

There are other errors in the ?Reynolds? site that you sent to Cousin Bill Talley, and I will provide you with them, when I am able. Hope this, at least, gives you some help in your search.

      Description: Updates:
Patrick Paul Ryan and Minerva Anne Edwards were married in Richmond, Va., by a Catholic Priest, Father Feeling, on 17 July 1855. I have a copy of the marriage which is a verification sent to the Court of Halifax, Va., for their records.
Phillip James Ryan was born in Halifax Co., Va., not Botetourt Co., Va.
The parents of Patrick Paul Ryan were Phillip Ryan and Mary Loughlan, as shown on the death certificate of William Thomas Ryan, my grandfather.
Patrick Paul Ryan was born in Kilkenny, Iteland.
