    [Page 204]Carter, Charles, of "Corotoman" and "Shirley," born 1732, the son of John and Elizabeth Hill Carter; was burgess from Lancaster county in 1758-1761, 1761-1765, October, 1765, 1766-1768, May, 1769, 1769-1771, 1772-1774, 1775-1776; member of the conventions of 1775, and of the first state council, 1776. he married (first) Mary W., daughter of Col. Charles Carter of "Cleve," (second) Ann Butler, daughter of Bernard Moore, of "Chelsea," King William county. He died in 1860.

    Carter, Edward, of "Blenheim," Albemarle county, son of John Carter, of "Corotoman" and "Shirley", was born about 1726, and was a burgess from 1765 to 1769. He married Sarah Champe, daughter of John and Anne (Carter) Champe, of King Georgey.

    John Carter built the original Christ Church; he cam to Virginia in 1635 at age 22 on the ship Safety (said to have come with his brother, Thomas Carter); he first settled in upper Norfolk Co., which later became Nansemond Co.; he returned to England on business several times, served in the House of Burgesses for Upper Norfolk Co. 1642-3 and for Nansemond Co. 1649....He patented 6, 153.9 Ac in Lancaster Co. and established Corotoman Plantation on the Rappahannock River between Carter's Creek and Corotoman River. He was a Justice of Lancaster Co., 1653-9. He married 1st c 1647 Jane Glyn; d.ca 1652; d/o Morgan Glyn of Middlesex, England; m/2 ca. 1655 Eleanor Eltonhead, d. ca 1656; d/o William Eltonhead and Widow of Capt. William Brocas, who d. by 11 Jun 1655 when his inv was rec. in Lancaster Co. m/3 ca 1657 distant cousine Anne Carter, d/o Cleave Carter of England; m/4 ca 1663 Sarah Ludlow, b England d ca 1668, d/o Gabriel Ludlow; m./5 ca 1668 Elizabeth Sherley, widow of ?, Glouchester Co., Children; George, Elizabeth, John Jr., Sarah, Robert and Charles.
