    US Continental Congressman. He was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, 1742 to 1775 and a member of the Virginia committee of correspondence in 1773. In 1774, he was elected a member of the First Continental Congress, serving until 1775. Reelected to Second First Continental Congress, he declined to serve and was a member of the Virginia Revolutionary conventions of 1775 and 1776. He was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1776, serving until his death. US Continental Congressman Theodorick Bland was his nephew.

    When Stafford County was created in 1664,?Patowmack Town,? later changed to Marlborough Town, was made the county seat and remained such until I748. Twenty-seven years after Stafford County was organized an Act of the Assembly for Ports and Towns was passed authorizing the creation of Marlborough Town. The Act set aside ?52 Acres whereof two Acres being for the Courthouse the other is for the Town." The tract was immediately surveyed by Theodoric Bland in August, 1691. The act was rescinded by Parliament, however, and not until 1705 was a second act passed, specifically naming the town "Marlborough," doubt­less in honor of the Duke made famous the previous year at the battle of Blenheim.
