TIPS FOR BREAKING THROUGH YOUR BRICK WALLS
Frequently, posters to this page lament the difficulty of finding enough ?government records? yielding "unquestionable facts" to prove kinship. That is a problem I can?t resist addressing, after four decades of teaching genealogical research, methods, and standards.
First, in historical research, there is no such thing as "unquestionable facts." Any of those government sources we rely on can err. Confidence in our conclusions can come only when our conclusion meets the five tests of the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS). https://www.familysearch.org/blog/en/genealogicalproofstandardpart1/
Second, the most-common reason why ?government records" fail us is that we feel we must have *direct* evidence: an explicit statement of fact that asserts an answer to our research question. However, even direct evidence often errs. Proof that withstands the test of time comes from *building a case* for each identity and each relationship. A case must be based on many pieces of evidence, not just one that says-so outright. This takes us back to the first criteria of the GPS: Reasonably Exhaustive Research. Most of the evidence we glean from thorough research will be indirect and negative. A tutorial on the different kinds of evidence can be found at https://www.evidenceexplained.com/content/quicklesson-17-evidence-analysis-process-map.
Third, most of us come into genealogy thinking that research is a matter of (a) identifying sources; (b) accessing those sources; and then (c) looking up the name of the person of interest. That?s merely a base-level ?search.? It?s not research. Research requires the application of strategies. That?s what opens doors for us when the person of interest doesn?t seem to be in whatever source we use.
The cheapest approach to learning strategies is to faithfully read the National Genealogical Society Quarterly (NGSQ)?a journal that, since 1988, has specialized in case studies demonstrating how to crash through the toughest stone walls. Nearly a thousand libraries across the nation carry this journal, so that most of us can access it for free. Or, more conveniently, we can join NGS and access all back issues at our desktop. https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/ngsq/
Do bear in mind that NGSQ articles feature the toughest of cases. Proof arguments can be much shorter and simpler. As an example, I?ve just posted one at the FamilySearch profile for Elizabeth Mills who married Archibald Chapman in 1811 in Giles Co., VA. https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/L712-6T4. This is a pattern most researchers can use to resolve stalemates in late-seventeenth and early-eighteenth century Virginia.
What is the Genealogical Proof Standard?

The Genealogical Proof Standard is a process used by genealogists to demonstrate what the minimums are that genealogists must do for their work to be credible. Based off a book written by Christine Rose entitled Genealogical Proof Standard: Building a Solid Case, this standard lays out five essential steps for accurate research:

Reasonably exhaustive research has been completed.
Each statement of fact has a complete and accurate source citation.
The evidence is reliable and has been skillfully correlated and interpreted.
Any contradictory evidence has been resolved.
The conclusion has been soundly reasoned and coherently written.
?The Genealogical Proof Standard isn?t a device per se,? says Ison, ?but it?s a process that will help us to determine what we know, helps us decide what we want to learn, helps us explain our work to others, gives us confidence about the direction we?re going, is the basis for approaching difficult research problems using indirect evidence, and lastly, it helps us to feel secure and safe in our conclusions.?
