  1. 1.  PATRIOT Joshua Powell was born Abt 1736, Amelia County, Virginia Colony; died 17 May 1781, Halifax County, Virginia.

    Notes:

Lancaster Co was formed in 1651 from Northumberland and York counties. There was probably one parish, Lancaster Parish. By a county court order Lancaster Co was divided into two parishes in 1654, Upper and Lower Parish, but the
name of Farnham Parish was in a few years given to the Upper Parish. Farnham became the frontier parish and had an indefinite extension westward. In 1656 Rappahannock Co was formed and the county lines were laid in conformity with the parish lines of Farnham Parish. In 1661, Sittingbourne Parish was created out of Farnham Parish so there became two Parishes in Rappahannock Co, each lying on both sides of the Rappahannock River. Sittenburne Parish was the western or frontier parish. In 1677, Sittenburne Parish was divided and St. Mary's Parish was formed from western part, and became the frontier parish. In 1683 Farnham Parish was divided into North Farnham and South Farnham, the river being the dividing line between the two parishes. In 1692 Rappahannock Co disappeared, when Essex and Richmond ounties were created from it. Rappahannock River was the dividing line, Richmond on the north side and Essex south of the river. Both of these counties had the same parishes, Farnham, Sittenburne and St. Mary's.

It now gets even more confusing, but to sum up the rest of the divisions etc. suffice to say that in 1714 the northern half of St. Mary's Parish in Richmond Co, was set up as Hanover Parish, and the reduced parish of St. Mary's lying south of the Rappahannock, was wholly included in Caroline Co after 1727. SO, you could have started out in Northumberland Co. and perhaps without moving ended up in Essex, Hanover, Caroline, Richmond etc. All of these Powells in all of these areas could easily have been from the same family. Parish information comes from "Parish Lines Diocese of Virginia" by Charles Francis Cocke.
